Don Armando: Argentinian restaurant in Green Point

Restaurant review By

“An Argentinian steakhouse that does authentic asado (grilled meat).

If you’re looking for a juicy steak done over the coals, you might want to try this relaxed family-run restaurant in Green Point that specialises in asado (an Argentine barbeque, or braai to you and me).

GET STARTED

On the starter menu (Entradas), expect to see Argentinian blood sausage served with tomato-and-onion salsa (R50); grilled sweetbread with a tomato-and-parsley salad (R55) and chorizo with chimichurri (R50). For those unfamiliar with this finger-licking sauce, chimichurri is a tangy salsa made of finely chopped parsley, minced garlic, sunflower oil, oregano, and white vinegar, which can be used as a marinade for – or to accompany – grilled meat.

THE MAIN ATTRACTION

The main menu (Grillados) includes everything from sirloin and T-Bone to lamb chops and pork – there’s even a fish of the day for the non-meateaters. All mains are served with chimichurri, but you can choose from a selection of other sauces, which include mushroom, pepper, mustard, garlic and herb, and tomato. The side dishes – not your run-of-the-mill accompaniments – take the main dishes to new heights. Some highlights include cauliflower mash (R35), pan-fried spinach with garlic and lemon (R35), grilled beetroot (R25) and a white bean salad (R30).

SOMETHING SWEET

While Argentinians are known for their carnivorous tendencies, their lust for sugar is evident in their fabulous desserts and sweet treats. We were excited to spot pancakes with dulce de leche on the menu! If you haven’t tried it, dulce de leche is a kind of caramelly condensed-milk confection that will satisfy the sweetest tooth on the planet. Also worth trying are the sorbets and chocolate fondant.

Decor-wise, it’s a modern steakhouse, with wooden tables and a combination of comfy booths and bar stools.

Opening times: Tuesday – Saturday, 10.30am – 10pm”
